IOM3 HK 150th Conference

On Friday 8 November, more than 150 delegates attended the IOM3 Hong Kong branch conference on Materials, Minerals and Mining in the Development of Hong Kong at the Regal Kowloon Hotel, part of the IOM3 150th anniversary programme of events.

Mr Tim Leung CEng FIMMM, Chair of the Organising Committee and IOM3HK Council member, welcomed representatives from local industry and academia to discuss, network and attend a series of presentations on Hong Kong’s past, present and future. IOM3 President, Professor Serena Best, gave the opening address on ‘IOM3: The past, the present and the future’, followed by an impressive line-up of speakers including the former Hong Kong Government Secretary for Works, Professor Mak Chai-Kwong, ICE Vice-President, Professor Ma Siu Cheung, Chief Executive of NWS Holdings Ltd and Mr John Battersby, BKAsia Pacific Limited Group Managing Director and Honorary Life Chairman of Lighthouse Club International who concluded the morning session.

The afternoon session included presentations on the materials challenges faced in the development of Hong Kong, the use of landfill materials in reclamation, the role of engineering geologists, and innovations and new technologies for the sustainable development of Hong Kong. Guy Bridges CEng FIMMM, Former President of the branch, closed the event with an overview of the past and future activities and events of the IOM3 Hong Kong branch, which in 2019 celebrated 35 years.
