IOM3 spoke to David McGowan, one of the judges at this year's Starpack Packaging Industry Innovation Awards, to discuss his career in packaging and what he looks forward to about the newly relaunched awards.
Briefly summarise your career to date and current role
I have over 28 year’s of technical management experience within the beer, premium spirits, design and soft drinks industries. Working for companies such as Bass, Allied Domecq, Bacardi and AB Inbev. I have led global cross functional teams responsible for the delivery of liquid, packaging and dispense innovation, meeting clear consumer needs whilst maintaining stringent premium quality standards. As a former Quality Manager, I know that premium quality can be creatively designed into concepts, which is why I crossed over into design. In my current role at PI Global, I look after 3D structural design, ensuring that all great structural designs are consumer relevant, but brought to market quickly, with no compromise on quality or style.
What's the best thing about the newly relaunched Starpack Packaging Industry Innovation Awards?
It is a credible professional recognition of the efforts of packaging professionals and the impact we have on consumers and ultimately on business success.
What are you, as a judge, keen to find in the entries?
I’m looking to see that agencies and packaging professionals have clearly understood their target consumer and have focussed their design and technical development to be relevant, whilst pushing supplier boundaries.
What is the most important thing to consider as an entrant?
Call out the unique selling points to the judges whether it is time, quality, cost or team work, remember that we are fellow packaging professionals and therefore will recognise special work.
What's your favourite new packaging from 2017, so far?
Favourite packaging – Rumbullion. For it is tactile, intriguing, relevant, makes you want to explore, all while being a technical challenge to deliver! A wonderful example of packaging.
