Presidential Address and New Fellows' Luncheon
IOM3 President Mr Martin Cox CEng FIMMM discussed industry changes at the presidential address and new fellows’ luncheon, which took place at IOM3 London headquarters on 4 April 2017.
Around 50 attendees including Institute trustees, new fellows and special guests from other organisations gathered to celebrate Martin Cox’s two-year appointment as President.
IOM3 Chief Executive Dr Bernie Rickinson said, “We so sincerely value the volunteers who give their time as President, and we thank Mike for his significant contribution to the Institute over the past couple of years.”
Prior to the presidential address, a medal ceremony was conducted to formally recognise Martin as the new IOM3 President. Former President Mike Hicks (FREng FIMMM FRAeS) was also presented with the Past President’s Badge.
In his address, Martin was able to draw on his professional experience and share case studies of mining and offshore projects. Martin’s work is clear evidence of an exceptional commitment to the progression and development of all aspects of materials science and engineering.
Widely known for his extensive knowledge of the energy industry, Martin spoke of matters including: greenhouse gases, global warming and air quality. “There are a lot of energy related issues at present, and we must understand that we can not go forward without picking up some of the hard lessons of the past,” said Martin.
He continued, “There is a great need for knowledge and understanding around the issues of today, and it is these discussions that will draw younger members into the Institute.”
Martin has a history of notable leadership roles. He became an IOM3 Council Member and Trustee in 2009. He is also a Board Member on the IOM3 Oil & Gas Division, a member of Society of Petroleum Engineers, and a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Engineers.
Another celebration of the day was the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between the Institute of Quarrying (IQ) and IOM3. Dr Miles Watkins, Fellow and Chairman of the IQ, explained the agreement will help the two body groups develop and grow through the exchange of knowledge and information.
