Young Persons' World Lecture Competition

On 31 October 2013, Cornelis van Niekerk from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, won the Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition with his lecture Novel Technique for In Situ Laser Alloying of AISI 410L Stainless Steel with Nitrogen During Laser Cladding.

The final was held at the Hong Kong Jockey Club and the finalists enjoyed a stay in Hong Kong prior to the final. The various activities that were arranged during their time in Hong Kong included, a trip to HAESL - a company that specialises in the overhaul and repair of Rolls-Royce engines and a trip around Hong Kong Island and Lamma Island.

Hendrik Hans from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, was awarded second place with his lecture Features on Vibrissae of Harbor Seals and Their Significance.

In third place was the UK representative, Adam Brown from the University of Leicester, with the lecture that earned him first place in the regional final in London, Exploring the Use of Synchrotron X-ray Scattering Methods to Detect Heterogeneous Nucleation.
