Developments to The Boilerhouse, the Institute’s new regional office, exhibition hall, and conference and training centre in Grantham, are moving on apace despite a series of problems resulting from the nature of the building. These meant that Materials Congress in May took place in nearby Springfield House, although judging of the Starpack Awards and the Institute’s March Council Meeting were held in part of the new building.

The internal mezzanine floor is due for completion and the external walls are ready for cladding. Much of the tiling to the kitchen and other facilities has been completed, along with the first fixing of many of the services.

In sourcing materials to convert The Boilerhouse, strenuous efforts have been made to reflect the interests of member communities. The support of different companies in obtaining cutting edge examples is recognised and appreciated. The Institute is committed to minimising the building’s carbon footprint, and is considering air-sourced heat pumps to heat and cool most of the building, solar panels to complement the water heating system, substantial insulation between the cladding and existing walls, and motion sensing lights.
