It is with great sadness to record the death of J Burgess Winter, a true titan of the mining community who served the industry with honour and distinction for 45 years.

Burgess started his minerals career at the Rhokana mine on the Zambian Copperbelt in 1959. Among his many achievements was his appointment as President and CEO of Magma Copper Company where Burgess was universally credited with turning around the Company which at the time was the third largest copper company in the USA. So impressive and successful was his leadership and achievements, in particular improving labour relations, that Burgess was summoned to The White House, in Washington DC to explain them to President Clinton, the House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Labour Secretary Robert Reich.

Throughout his career Burgess received many awards and accolades. He will be sadly missed by his family friends, colleagues and all who have been inspired by him.

A full obituary of Burgess is available from this link -  and an edited version will appear in the MP&EM newsletter #10 of October 2018.
