Quality over quantity is a wellestablished saying, but today’s improvements in quality often lead to quantity enhancements, too. A new range of high-pressure filters has been released by Atlas Copco Compressors, UK, which provide for a pressure drop half that of conventional coalescing or particulate filters. The low resistance of the optimal airflow path allows maximum contaminant removal while reducing energy consumption, and the high-performance stainless steel cores ensure the durability of the cartridges, reducing the risk of implosion and guaranteeing performance over the filters’ lifetime.

Instron, USA, has introduced the CEAST MF30 Melt Flow Tester, meeting the requirements for temperature control of highly sensitive materials imposed by ISO 1133-2. The single-weight measurement system is designed for quality control as well as R&D, and delivers easy and accurate measurements of the flow. Additional features include a high-resolution load cell for controlled compacting, with a maximum force of 750N, and a high-precision encoder, allowing for the controlled extrusion of the melt to a defined height.

American firm Dow Polyurethanes has developed a family of hydrophobic polyols called Vorapel to increase moisture and chemical resistance, appropriate for applications such as infrastructure, secondary containment, chemical tanks and electronic components. The polyols are low viscosity, clear liquids that can be tailored to a range of molecular weights and functionalities, and will enable products to resist extremes of temperature and environmental elements, helping to extend lifespans.

A high-resolution basis weight sensor with multiple source options aimed at reducing waste and increasing commercial production has been released by Thermo Fisher Scientific, USA. Using a Kr-85 source, the Beta Plus Weight Transmission Sensor is designed to offer accurate basis weight readings for webs and films of 6–7,000g/m2. The sensor enhances web gauging performance by incorporating improved optics and advanced digital electronics. Its usable life is approximately five times longer than comparable sensors.
