The Leeds Bradford Materials Engineering society held the local heat of the Institute of Materials Minerals and Mining Young Persons' Lecture competition on 25 February 2014, under the watchful eyes of judges Alan Morrell, Dr Nicole Hondow and Dr Faye Bygrave.
The event was held at the University of Leeds and was attended by postgraduates, scientists and engineers. Each participant provided a 12 minute presentation on any subject of their choice relating to the field of Materials Science, and were scored according to their lecture's clarity, content and structure.
The winner of the £100 prize was PhD student Omar Matar of the Institute for Materials Research, SPEME, who presented a talk entitled “Materials Used for Artificial Hip Replacements”. Runners up included PhD student Anton Goetzee Barral of the University of Leeds.
Omar will now present his lecture at the North Eastern heat at the University of Leeds on 12 March 2014.
