The Packaging Technologist holds a key role within New Product Introduction; providing technical input on packaging development projects from receipt of customer brief through to product commercialisation, whilst ensuring that the resulting packaging components comply with the regulations applicable to our customers chosen distribution markets.

The post holder will demonstrate their FMCG experience and packaging material knowledge to provide support to the production facing teams via attendance at line trials and through innovative problem-solving. As a personable and efficient communicator, the Pack Tech will develop relationships with customer stakeholders as the key packaging contact; they will also provide efficient confirmation of specification changes to supply chain colleagues and in collaboration with suppliers create accurate component specification documentation to ensure that products are delivered correctly, on-time to the agreed project budget.

The role is largely office based within a fast-paced manufacturing environment, necessitating proactive management of the packaging work stream, whilst maintaining flexibility and enthusiasm as a team player working alongside multi-disciplinary project teams.

Skills/Experience required:

  • 10P Certificate or equivalent and/or significant relevant industry experience
  • Good range of technical materials knowledge and packaging development experience
  • Keen interest in New Product Development and evolving packaging material and recycling legislation
  • Demonstrate ability to efficiently plan, organise and manage own tasks and deliver them to deadlines
  • Ability to work individually or collaboratively as a member of a team
  • Good people management skills
  • Ability to organise, prioritise and multi-task workload
  • Flexibility and an ability to react and respond positively to changes in priority and workload
  • Ability to retain focus and maintain a calm demeanour under pressure

  • A good eye for colour - The importance of accurate colour distinction in this role may require that the candidate undergoes colour vision testing.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Following training, the key duties of the post are as follows;

  • Complete all packaging development tasks for New Product Introductions and changes for key customer accounts, ensuring relevant market compliance, and on time delivery against specified launch requirements.
  • Routinely assess project 'risk' in relation to packaging components and associated processes, highlighting these risks to the project team (with escalation where required) and develop strategies to mitigate risks identified.

  • Maintain an understanding of evolving environmental packaging legislation

  • Demonstrate an existing good level of packaging material and application knowledge.

  • Attend applicable supplier training & innovation webinars, trade fairs, and other training/lecture opportunities to ensure knowledge remains relevant and supplier innovations are evaluated for implementation.

  • Review customer supplied artwork files against the chosen supplier capabilities and applicable packaging labelling regulations, whilst ensuring agreed product costings are maintained.

  • Collaborate with the engineering team to assess component and line capability; identify line trial requisition and attend production line trials to provide technical input / assistance.

  • Complete packaging testing protocols from the testing matrix against chosen packaging formats.

  • Provide technical input to IR investigations at pace in an efficient manner.

  • Review all packaging processes with an emphasis on cost saving initiatives, and ways to increase process.

  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of supplier strengths/weaknesses, changing lead times, latest technology advances, and potential application for the LHB business.

  • Develop and maintain close working relationships with preferred suppliers and industry experts to draw on for technical knowledge.

  • Carry out other associated tasks determined by the Packaging Development Manager.
