News Writer - The Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IOM3)

Job description

IOM3 is a leading membership organisation for the Materials, Minerals and Mining communities in the UK and abroad. The magazine group based in central London produces technical magazines that cover the interests of our approx. 18,000 members. This is a great opportunity to join a small, enthusiastic team at an exciting time, with new digital opportunities, and strong print titles.

Reporting to the Magazine Group Editor, while overseeing the news duties of the Staff Writer, the News Writer fulfils a key role in the editorial team by leading the news sections across print and online, producing news, special reports and blog posts, and feeding back on coverage. Other important roles include representing the publications at events, to raise their profile and build relationships, and supporting the Magazine Group Editor. The News Writer will have an ‘eye’ for a good story, well-developed capability for interviews, and the confidence to set briefs and ask for rewrites.

You should have a proven ability to write incisive, well-structured news and news features within a print magazine and online communications environment. A confident face-to-face and telephone interview manner, strong editorial skills and the ability to sense a good story. It’s essential that you are comfortable working with scientific or technical content.
