This is newsletter no.4, following the Board meeting on 27th Feb 2018 at IOM3 London.

Board Chair

Dr Martin Brunnock of Tata Steel UK was confirmed as the new Chair of the Iron and Steel Society. The position of Vice Chair will be confirmed in April.

Steel Medals

The steel-related IOM3 medals to be awarded in 2018 was the main topic of the meeting. These are the Bessemer, Hadfield, Thomas, Colclough, Stokoweic, Fitzgerald, Normanton and Williams medals. The medal nominees were discussed and the winners agreed unanimously. These names were forwarded to the IOM3 Awards Committee for ratification and will be announced in April.


 Work on the planning and organising of a number of conferences mentioned in earlier newsletters is progressing:

Residuals in steel at Warwick University in November 2018.

Steel Strategy Seminar on Industry 4.0 in Autumn 2018.

2020 European Electric Steelmaking international conference will be 16 – 18th September at The Diamond centre Sheffield with a Gala Dinner at the Cutlers Hall Sheffield.

The Alloy development conference will be in Autumn 2019 in Sheffield.

Characterisation of Steels at Harwell, also in 2019.

The PhD symposium took place on 27th February 2018, at Armourers' Hall in London.  The highlight was the lecture by Bimlendra Jha, CEO of Tata Stel UK, regarding Steel in a low carbon world.
