Premier Awards Dinner for Institute’s 2007 Medals and Prizes
This year’s Premier Awards Dinner for recipients of the Institute’s 2007 Medals and Prizes was held in early July at the Institute’s London headquarters. Despite the overcast and chilly evening, the event began with a warm and friendly champagne reception, with entertainment provided by the Jon Spanyol Jazz Quartet from the Royal College of Music.
Winners involved in the field of steel and metal were: Lakshmi Mittal, President of Arcelor-Mittal Steel, recipient of the Bessemer Gold Medal for his business acumen developing the international steel industry while growing his own family business; Dr Bob Keown OBE, who received the Platinum Medal in recognition of his involvement in establishing the National Metals Technology Centre in the UK; and the Gold Medal winner, Dr Adrian Normanton, Manager of Steelmaking and Casting at Corus Research and Development Group for his strong team leadership skills which have resulted in research being applied to industrial applications at Corus. This year, for the first time, a video link was used, to show Normanton receiving his award from Mike Pettifor, Chairman of the steel division. Normanton was attending the Sheffield Metallurgical and Engineering Association Celebrity Lecture that evening.
The majority of the Institute’s premier awards were presented at the dinner, as well as the Vanadium, Charles Hatchett, and Composite awards, along with the Harvey Flower Titanium Prize. The remaining honours will be presented throughout the year. For full details of all the 2007 award winners, visit www.iom3.org/awards/2007awardwinners.htm.
