Sealing with Elastomers

The course content covers:

Introduction to Elastomer Materials - provides a basic introduction to elastomers, their fundamental properties and how this affects their performance. Understanding why they need to be formulated and vulcanised to achieve durable performance.

Elastomer Types and Their Selection - presents the different elastomer types, defines their structure and properties and how these can impact on their selection as a sealing material.

Seal Formulation Design - explains the compounding considerations required to achieve a durable seal formulation. Provides examples of seal formulations and how the key ingredients can influence the properties which are important to ensure good sealing performance.

Introduction to Seal Design Concepts - discusses the fundamental concepts of sealing with elastomers. How the properties of the seal  material can affect sealing. Provides examples of good and bad seal design options to help avoid the design pitfalls. Reviews how techniques such as FEA can assist in the design process.

Assessment of Long Term Sealing Properties - explains what specific elastomer properties can influence long term sealing performance. Discusses appropriate testing techniques and methodology to assess and predict long term sealing potential in order to arrive at a durable seal material.

Seal Material Specification - explanation as to how to create a robust material specification, what tests should be included and how an existing specification can be optimised.

Avoidance of Seal Failures - overview of the different forms of seal failure, how to identify them and understand their root cause. Steps to take to avoid failure occurring and achieve long term performance within a given environment.
