Mike Hicks FREng FIMMM FRAeS, IOM3 President 2015-2016

IOM3 Fellow, Mike Hicks was the Global Head of Materials Engineering at Rolls-Royce before retiring in 2014. He had been with the company for more than 36 years and was associated with materials throughout this period.

He is widely recognised for his contributions to materials engineering and has developed a comprehensive understanding of microstructural and mechanical property relationships which has underpinned Rolls-Royce's ability to develop new materials capable of operating in very aggressive environments. He also directed the corporate Research & Technology Strategy for Materials. This covers a range of composite materials, intermetallics  and coatings, as well as the more traditional titanium alloys, nickel superalloys and steels. 

Mike was the Rolls-Royce authority on materials and was appointed to Senior Fellow in 2012, one of only 11 across all engineering disciplines in the company.

He is on the Industrial Steering Groups of Birmingham, Swansea and Cambridge Universities. He was also a Board member of TSTL, a joint venture company between Chromalloy and Rolls-Royce which makes high temperature coatings for turbine blades. He has worked on a number of BIS, EPSRC, NATO and IOM3 committees and is Vice-Chair of the national Materials KTN. He is an Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham and Swansea University and has authored of a number of external publications. 

He is a Fellow of the RAeS and was appointed to the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2007. He was presented with the IOM3 TB Marsden Award in 2004 and was awarded the Specialist Gold Medal by RAeS for his contribution to aerospace materials.
