Adhesive film turns smartwatch into health-monitor
A thin adhesive film could upgrade a consumer smartwatch into a powerful health-monitoring system say researchers at the University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA), USA.
Monitoring chemical indicators found in sweat gives a real-time snapshot of what's happening inside the body. A study detailing the technology was recently published in the journal of Science Advances.
The team engineered a disposable, double-sided film that attaches to the underside of a smartwatch. The film detects molecules such as metabolites and nutrients present in sweat. They also built a supporting smartwatch and app to record data.
One of the authors of the work, graduate student Yichao Zhao notes that use of a double-sided adhesive with a vertically conductive film eliminates the need for external connectors.
