The environmental cost of low-carbon infrastructure can be reduced if ideas of a circular economy are adopted, concludes a study from the University of Leeds, UK, with initial input from IOM3.Researchers say the design of offshore wind turbines, solar panels and batteries must focus on reuse or remanufacturing at the end of operational life.

The researchers see a limited window for improvements in and their analysis found that ‘decommissioning plans for offshore wind are at best formulaic and at worst perfunctory and provide no value to the growing movement toward a circular economy’. They call for licensing of future wind farms to include requirements for sustainable decommissioning.
