IOM3 HK - Technical Visit to Dextra Guangzhou Factory

Hong Kong Branch
20 Dec 2019

The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) Hong Kong Branch and The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) Material Division jointly organised a one-day technical visit to Dextra's Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Factory in Guangzhou, China on 6 July 2019. Dextra Guangzhou Factory manufactures high-tensile composite glass-fibre and carbon-fibre based FRP bars and profile. Dextra supplies these FRP products to the construction projects around the globe, including projects in the United States, Hong Kong and Singapore etc.

This technical visit was split into a morning and an afternoon session with a lunch gathering in between. During the morning session, Dextra's representatives presented the latest developments, applications and various project references for the use of FRP products, and they explained how FRP products help to achieve more efficient and economical engineering. A lunch gathering at a restaurant nearby the factory then followed after the morning session, which allowed the visitors from IOM3, HKIE and Dextra's representatives to interact and share knowledge of the use of composite materials across engineering disciplines. A tour to the FRP production line and testing laboratory in the factory was held in the afternoon session. The visiting group was introduced the manufacturing process of FRP bars from raw material to packaging and the implementation of the quality assurance system during the tour.

As advanced composite materials are becoming more and more common and well understood in engineering and construction, this technical visit to Dextra's Guangzhou Factory has provided an excellent opportunity for the members of IOM3 and HKIE Material Division to explore the latest FRP products and technology that were available in the market.
