IOM3 (HK) successfully organized a Technical Visit to Nano & Advanced Materials Institute (NAMI) Expert Workshop on 8 September 2018 (Saturday) with 40 participants.  The participants were welcome by Dr. Ivan Sham who is the R&D Director of Construction and Building Materials sector at NAMI. A detailed presentation was given by Dr. Sham and his colleagues – scientists: Dr Sherry Bao and Ir Dr Jeffery Lam, about three different topics respectively :  (1) NAMI’s demand driven innovative research  Model, (2) Waterproofing technology for tunnels, as well as (3) Fire resistant high strength concrete in tunnel construction.

The NAMI, established in 2006, was designated by the Innovation and Technology Commission as a Research and Development Centre for nanotechnology and advanced materials. NAMI undertakes and provides support for market- oriented research in nanotechnology and advanced materials, and strives for commercialization of the technologies to promote the economic growth of Hong Kong as knowledge- based economy.

NAMI has been actively conducting R&D on construction & building materials technologies fitting the needs of local and oversea markets. This includes the developments of various coating and lining materials with waterproof, anti-corrosion, anti-bacteria, etc., as well as next generation concrete materials with better strength, thermal insulation property, and lightweight.  The participants gave detail understanding about their recent achievement in waterproofing and high strength concrete development.

The participants also got chance to visit the first-of-its-kind in Hong Kong, applied research oriented laboratory to better understand how a material research laboratory to operate and the participants were introduced the function of each of material orientated equipment to support the growing demands and challenges in their research works.

NAMI and his members had many publications in international journals/conferences, and obtained numbers of local/international awards in Hong Kong and worldwide. The participants were impressed for the advance they made on the research in construction material development.  They wish to have more partnership with the industry as so to continue the momentum they have achieved currently.  If anyone is interested, please feel free to contact them separately.

Special Thank You to Dr. Ivan Sham, R&D Director of NAMI and his colleagues – scientists: Dr Sherry Bao and Ir Dr Jeffery Lam for giving such a fruitful morning to the participants.
