IOM3(HK) - Technical Visit to Hong Kong Tseung Kwan O – Lam Tin Tunnel on 9 June 2018
On 9 June 2018, the IOM3 Hong Kong Branch organized a technical visit to Tseung Kwan O – Lam Tin Tunnel – Main Tunnel and Associated Works (TKO-LT Tunnel). The visit was well received by total 30 numbers of visitors, and the registration was full within hours. Before the visit, Ms Melon Mak from Assistant Resident Engineers of AECOM gave an overview of the project.
The visitors knew that upon the gradual completion of new residential housing developments, the population of Tseung Kwan O District will be increased. This will aggravate the traffic load of Tseung Kwan O District. Therefore need to construct the Tseung Kwan O – Lam Tin Tunnel which is the government’s major initiative to meet the traffic demand arising from the anticipated population increase. The TKO-LT Tunnel mainly comprises the construction of a 2.2 km long dual two-lane main tunnel connecting Cha Kwo Ling and Tseung Kwan O, and a branch tunnel connecting the westbound main tunnel from Tseung Kwan O to the toll plaza of the Eastern Harbour Crossing.
Senior Resident Engineer Mr Billy Siu of AECOM gave a tour to the Lam Tin Interchange and the tunnel portal. The visitors experienced the massive excavation process and we were presented with the detailed construction procedures. The site formation work is mostly being carried out by drill and blast method very closed to the existing MTR tunnel and ventilation building. Conventional vertical screen and innovative mini-roofover system were adopted as flyrock protective measures. Vibration and Air-overpressure were monitored during the blasting works. The adjacent sensitive receivers including utilities and buildings were also monitored. After completion, the Lam tin interchange will be covered by noise enclosures and landscape desk locally. It comprises complicated slip roads system to ensure smooth connection to Eastern Harbor Crossing and Cha Kwo Ling Road as well as future extension of T2 trunk road.
The main tunnel has large span excavation - the maximum span of 28m width at the connection with branch tunnel. It is excavated by drill and blast method. The tunnel excavation was at the beginning stage on the date of visit. But, the visitors felt how comprehensive the tunnel excavation proceeds. The tunnel unavoidably needs to blast underneath in close proximity to the existing MTR tunnel several times at different location. The min separation between main tunnel and MTRC tunnel is approx. 12m. The tunnel blasting were being conducted during MTR non-traffic hour to ensure the MTR operation would not be adversely affected. The visitors found that the construction works, both site formation and tunneling works are progressing well.
After the site visit, the visitors had fruitful discussion and exchange with Chief Resident Engineer Mr. KY Chan, and Senior Resident Engineer Mr Billy Siu. Active responses were received from the visitors concerning about the technical and construction matters.
