About the Hong Kong Branch
The former Institution of Mining and Metallurgy (IMM) was founded in 1892 and was a professional and learned society for engineers engaged in the minerals industry. The IMM had branches in the UK, Ireland, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Southern Africa, Malaysia, Australia and Western Canada. IMM merged with the Institute of Materials to form IOM3 and was officially recognised by the UK's Privy Council on 26 June 2002.
IOM3(HK) was formed in December 1984 and is a registered society under the Laws of Hong Kong. The membership of the Branch increased steadily in the 1980s and 1990s and now exceeds 215.
Branch Members are drawn from a wide range of disciplines, including geology, engineering geology, geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, mining engineering, materials engineering, tunnelling and materials science.
The objectives and purpose of the Branch are to advance in Hong Kong the objects of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining to advance the science and practice of operations within the materials, minerals and mining industry.
What are the local procedures?
Eligibility for Corporate, Associate and Technician membership of the IOM3 and, where sought, registration with the Engineering Council, will be evaluated following a review of your qualifications, training and professional experience by staff and senior members of the Institute culminating in an interview with two members who are resident in Hong Kong.
How can I join the Hong Kong Branch?
