DESCRIPTION:Joint meeting with the Royal Aeronautical Society Derby Branch and the IMechE Derby and Nottingham Area Committee<br />A talk by Dr. Kate Fox Associate Fellow in Light Alloys at Rolls-Royce plc, Derby, UK<br />Synopsis: Titanium alloys are used widely in the aero-engine industry due to their excellent specific properties and corrosion resistance, this talk will review threats from service operation of jet engines. Some fundamental aspects of the crystal structure of titanium alloys mean that it can exhibit some quirky mechanical behaviour particularly at relatively low temperatures. My talk will discuss the multi-scale challenge of understanding mechanical performance and will give some examples of where application of advanced characterisation tools and modelling techniques has shed light on failure mechanisms such as cold dwell fatigue<br />Meeting will be available online (Microsoft Teams)\n
