DESCRIPTION:All welcome to attend in person or online <br />A talk by Dr Robin Wilson, University of Nottingham<br />This presentation explores the different ways materials are used to control and shape acoustic environments in and around buildings. Starting with some of the standard challenges faced by acoustic designers, the often-contradictory roles materials are asked to play are explored trough case-study buildings. These reveal relationships of scale where the observed behaviours of materials are inextricably linked the size of the components they form, and in turn, their match to the wavelength of the sound with which they interact. Recent developments in the way we model acoustic/material interactions are introduced, offering glimpses into a future where the properties of materials might be tailored to sculpt complex soundscapes within rooms. The role of materials in controlling our acoustic environment concludes by exploring overlaps and tensions between strategies adopted to deliver zero carbon buildings and the ambition of designers to provide for the wider wellbeing needs of those who live in them.<br />Venue Information:\n
