SUMMARY:Blasting in proximity to a world heritage site - A success story
DESCRIPTION:The case study presented relates to Whitwell Quarry in Derbyshire, where successful blasting operations have been concluded in the vicinity of a registered ancient monument (a number of caves) containing some of the earliest known man-made cave painting in Europe. The aim of this presentation is to describe the successful development and implementation of a new blast monitoring and predicting protocol. This was based on best practice methods such as the use of electronic detonators and linear superposition for blast vibration control.<br />\n
 Some 500 blasts have taken place with no blast induced vibration being above the limits imposed by the Mineral Planning Authority. In addition, the results of the displacement monitoring surveys showed no signs of permanent change. This has allowed 4.1 million tonnes of limestone to be extracted.<br />\n
