Conventional Power Generation: Examples of Materials Challenges
Add to calThe University of Nottingham, and virtual (MS Teams)
A talk by Andy Morris Chief Mechanical Engineer and Technical Governance, EDF Energy Coal and Gas Operations Synopsis: Large conventional power stations are running to closure in the short term. Safe operation of these assets as they approach end of life has presented some difficult technical challenges. The presentation will firstly give a brief update on the key challenges and opportunities facing EDF Energy in 2022. Examples will be discussed on how ageing materials integrity issues have been overcome on the conventional plant steam turbine fleet by a combination of research, safety assessments, practical operational changes and inspection due diligence. This will cover tribology considerations related to ageing blade to disc joints, other rotor shaft interfaces and the impact on integrity. Other brief examples will touch on pressure systems integrity and the benefits and shortfalls of current condition monitoring practice. The issue of condition monitoring will be expanded to give some insight on new initiatives with digital twins. Learning points will be outlined with some reflection on issues the author has faced and overcome on several high-profile offshore wind farm projects.
