Ralph Sanderson CEng FIMMM FNEIMME 31 October1931 – 7 March 2019

Ralph Sanderson spent all of his mining career in the North East Coalfield.  As many did, Ralph learned his trade from a manual beginning, before qualifying as a mine manager.  He was extremely highly regarded by his peers and staff and began his managerial career at East Hetton Colliery before moving on to Vane Tempest, Wearmouth and Easington.  In the late 1980s he reached his pinnacle when promoted to Chief Mining Engineer North East Area.

Ralph was an active and highly respected member of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers for a large part of his working life and served on Council for many years before becoming President of the North of England Branch of IMinE in 1990-1991.  He was awarded Life Membership of The Institution of Mining Engineers in 1993.

Ralph had an active social life with a great love of horses as a race horse owner, and also lovingly caring for a redundant pit pony.  Greatly missed by friends and family, he will always be remembered for his reliability and compassion.
