Events & Awards
Events and conferences
The Institute organises a range of events which are ideal opportunities for networking as well as finding out the latest state of the art, updating your technical knowledge, or broadening your materials interests. Specialist conferences are mainly organised through the Institute’s technical divisions, while our Local Societies network provides a series of lectures, visits and social events across the UK. Our web pages also provide a comprehensive calendar of worldwide events relevant to materials, minerals and mining.
Institute events bring you face-to-face with materials experts, deliver focused information, promote technical advances and provide a vehicle for continuous learning, evaluation and adaptation. Institute members will normally get a member discount to attend co-sponsored events – please enquire when registering.
The Institute has a network of over 60 affiliated Local Societies distributed throughout the UK, covering a wide range of disciplines and running events throughout the year. It also has affiliated societies in most other continents of the world. Connect with members in your region or attend an event relevant to your interest.

Awards & Competitions
IOM3 confers awards for personal achievement, for published work and for contributions to the profession. We also have a number of annual awards presented to students, to technicians and also to our local societies. Awards are presented at special occasions throughout the year, and some of our award winners deliver lectures to which all members are invited.
YOUNG PERSONS' NATIONAL AND WORLD LECTURE COMPETITIONS
One of our long-standing events is the Young Persons' National Lecture Competition which is run in local heats every year and culminates in a national final in London. The winner of the national final goes on to take part in the World Lecture Competition which each year takes place in different locations around the globe, with participants from several countries (and continents) in which IOM3 is active. This hugely successful event has grown from strength to strength and celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2015.
The Starpack Awards scheme has been running since 1960, and is the premier UK annual award scheme recognising innovation in packaging design and technology. Starpack constitute the UK packaging industry’s most prestigious awards, aiming to help raise packaging standards in the UK by rewarding and encouraging creativity. They are considered an integral part of the packaging industry, and the culmination of the Awards at the annual Starpack Awards ceremony is a highlight of the packaging industry calendar. Awards are presented to schools and students.
