Strain Measurement in Composites

15 Nov 2017

The annual BSSM (British Society for Strain Measurement) Showcase and Exhibition is focusing on Strain Measurement in Composites. The event will capture the current state of the art in the measurement and analysis of composite material behaviour and structural performance.  The emphasis will be on full-field strain based approaches that allow a visualization of damage evolution covering a range of scales from fibre fractures to global structural response. The speakers from both academia and industry will demonstrate how the techniques can enhance understanding and address the challenges of design in composite materials.

The presentation topics, shown below, are useful over many industries including aerospace, marine, automotive (particularly F1), material suppliers and energy generation:

  1. 'Overview of activities at NCC' - Enrique Garcia, National Composites Centre

  2. 'Assessment of composite components and structures using full-field imaging approaches'
Prof Janice Barton, University of Southampton

  3. '3D DIC applied to high velocity impact on laminated glass and composites in aerospace'
    Prof John Dear, Imperial College

  4. 'Non Destructive Evaluation of the RNLI's Advanced Composite Structures'
    Holly Phillips, RNLI

  5. ' High strain rate testing of lightweight materials: challenges and opportunities'
    Ian Butterworth, Warwick Manufacturing

There will be an exhibition of equipment related to those used in the presentation. The exhibition will provide interactive demonstrations of the techniques. Further to this there will be a short tour of the relevant facilities at NCC at the end of the day. The showcase is aimed at engineers and scientists with a background in composite materials and structural design.
