15th International Conference on Engineering Structural Integrity

8 May 2019 - 9 May 2019
Cambridge, Cambridgeshire

The 15th biennial International Conference on Engineering Structural Integrity Assessment in conjunction with the 2019 International Symposium on Structural Integrity will be held at Granta Park in Great Abington near Cambridge, one of the oldest university cities in the world.

The ESIA15-ISSI2019 joint conference provides a special opportunity to offer a vehicle for exchange of views on how to characterise, analyse, predict, and assess the engineering structural integrity of plant, components, and structures together with buildings and infrastructure. It will allow an evaluation of progress and challenges in these areas to ensure that economic, safe, and reliable operation is achieved for new design and existing systems.

Oral and poster presentations will allow sufficient time for follow-up discussions, friendly debate, and relaxed participation.

We invite papers from industry, regulators, academia, technology, support and supply chain organisations. These relate to the assurance of structural integrity in relation to safe, economic and reliable solutions across the industry. The areas to be covered will include:

  • Methodology developments
  • Materials modelling and testing for applications, including through-life property changes
  • Relevant non-destructive inspection technology developments
  • Condition monitoring of structures and components
  • Design and assessment codes and standards
  • Durability assessment of component damage
  • Operational experience including case studies
  • Risk-based inspection and maintenance
  • Plant life prediction methodologies
  • Issues relating to decommissioning, disposal, and long-term waste storage

Presentations are anticipated with topics covering the general areas of monitoring and inspection, materials performance, assessment and plant evaluation. Each day will commence with a series of keynote presentations by internationally recognised speakers, drawn from the industry, business and academic communities.  These will include:

• Dr Rod Smith on Structural integrity issues in the transport sector,
• Professor Shan-Tung Tu on Residual stress: simulation, measurement and control,
• Professor Peter Scott on Challenges of corrosion effects on structural integrity,
• Professor Shenfang Yuan on Probabilistic data mining for damage diagnosis of aircraft structures,
• Professor Ferri Aliabadi on Progress on structural health monitoring for life management of composite air frames,
• Dr Qing Mao on Some aspects on safety of Chinese nuclear reactors,
• Professor Bruce Drinkwater on Advances in ultrasonic imaging of NDT,
• Professor Sheng Liu on Development and challenges of key electronic manufacturing chain equipment,
• Professor David Knowles on Welding and residual stress effects.

These will be followed by research presentations that seek to address current challenges together with discussions that explore and agree potential collaboration opportunities in particular between the UK and China.

  • Abstracts (up to 300 words) should indicate the theme and topic area to which it is appropriate and contain the presentation title, the author’s name(s) and affiliation(s), five key words, an illustration and table, and the full contact details of the corresponding author
  • The conference language is English
  • Full papers of not more than eight pages are requested by 8th April 2019
  • Papers are accepted on the understanding that an author will present the paper at the conference in English

  • Abstracts must be submitted before 31st January 2019
  • Authors will be notified of acceptance prior to 18th February 2019 (with guidelines)
  • Submission of full paper for review prior to 8 April 2019
  • All papers received at that date will be included in the conference proceedings of ESIA15, ISSI 2019

The conference organisers are keen for postgraduates and early career workers to submit papers and have over the years awarded a prize for the best paper and poster presentation. This prize is the Young Presenters Award in honour of the late Professor Keith Miller FREng, whose work in the area of engineering structural integrity was world renowned.

  • Peter Flewitt Bristol University
  • Shan-Tung Tu East China University of Science and Technology
  • Brian Tomkins FESI
  • Xuedong Chen Hefei General Machinery Research Institute
  • Steve Garwood Imperial College London
  • Sujun Wu Beihang University

All delegates will be keen to see new and innovative equipment, software, and research that could assist them in their work. Use this opportunity to exhibit and demonstrate your latest products and developments.  Posters can be used to communicate recent research in both industry and academia.

Put the name of your company or organisation in front of delegates by sponsoring a conference event, including the main conference, the conference reception, and the conference dinner. For further information on how you can raise your profile across the industrial community, please contact Sue Lowe of the Conference Organising Committee at sue.lowe@fesi.org.uk or Dr Mingliang Zhu at mlzhu@china-sic.net
