Well done to Harriet Parnell who is a regular attender of East Midlands Materials Society (EMMS) meetings. She is pursuing a PhD with the Mid-Infrared Photonics Group in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham, UK. Last year she won the Midlands regional heat of the IOM3 Young Persons Lecture Competition and came third in the national final. This year she was selected to present her work to MPs and academics by poster at a STEM for Britain event held at the House of Commons. The subject was “Shedding Light on Cancer: How a Mid-infrared transmitting glass could help diagnose early stage cancer”. Harriet did really well, coming third (out of 60) in the  ”engineering and maths” session, for which she received the bronze medal and £1000 prize. A copy of her poster is available here.

EMMS has previously part-funded Harriet to present a paper at the International Symposium on Non-oxide and New Optical Glasses in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.
