The Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining offers a range of services and activities of interest to those working in the construction materials industries.
Both the Construction Materials Group and IOM3 encourage members to keep up to date and improve business performance through Continuing Professional Development by such means as attending short courses, conferences and regional meetings and accrediting company training schemes. Professional development is particularly vital in maintaining the Chartered Scientist qualification.
Professional recognition, education and training
The Construction Materials Group, through the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, offers a range of nationally recognised professional qualifications demonstrating a member’s competence. These are available to members working in all levels of the wood industry from technicians to engineers and managers. Suitably qualified members are encouraged to register upgrading to CEng, IEng, Eng Tech, CSci and CEnv.
Education and Training
IOM3 seeks to meet industry’s education and training needs through a wide range of activities, which promote understanding and awareness of construction materials and products. The Institute provides practical assistance to those involved in construction materials education and training.
The Institute also provides schools with educational resources and supports schools with the Schools Affiliate Scheme.
As the professional qualifying body for materials scientists and engineers, the Institute sets the standard in materials education by actively working with Derby University to develop Foundation Degrees, and accredits construction product courses at colleges and universities to meet the required standards.
IOM3 provides training guidelines for professional grades and Engineering Council registration, offers Professional Adviser Scheme for trainees, and provides certificate courses in Heavy Clay Technology and Quarry Products.
More than 70% of the Institute’s members work in industry, those involved with onstruction materials and construction products in the supply chain, processing and end-user industries. The Institute works closely with associated organisations also working in the field of construction materials and products. Acting as a uniquely valuable resource, the Institute is able to offer assistance with a variety of materials. Companies can access the Institute’s services through membership of the Industry Affiliate Scheme.
The Materials Information Service (MIS) helps companies select materials and processes for more profitable and competitive products. The MIS provides advice on applications and processing methods, offers information on construction materials, identifies information resources and contacts, helps companies with materials selection, and provides visits to company premises by Regional Advisers.
Companies can enjoy the benefits of MIS and other Institute services at discounted rates by becoming a corporate member of the Institute through its Industry Affiliate Scheme (IAS).
