The CIE Founders' Lecture was presented by Prof Simon Green, Professor of Planetary and Space Science at The Open University at the Princess Alexandria Auditorium, at Yarm School. Prof Green spoke about "Asteroid Impact Mitigation: Why? How? When?". For the first time in the history of the planet, humans have the potential to prevent a large scale natural disaster. He described the potential threat and consequences of asteroid impacts and why we should take action now to be prepared for the next one. He explained some of the most feasible techniques proposed to deflect potential impactors and plans for space missions to test them.
