About Can You Make It?

The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) is a major UK engineering institution whose activities encompass the whole materials cycle, from exploration and extraction, through characterisation, processing, forming, finishing and application, to product recycling and land reuse. It exists to promote and develop all aspects of materials science and engineering, geology, mining and associated technologies, mineral and petroleum engineering and extraction metallurgy, as a leading authority in the worldwide materials and mining community.

The Institute is committed to supporting and promoting all aspects of materials science and engineering in schools and has a history of working closely with secondary schools around the UK. The Schools Affiliate Scheme, launched in 1999, provides member schools with support and resources to enrich the teaching of the relevant topics in the 11 to 19 curriculum and raises awareness of careers in engineering to young people by showing them how materials have helped to shape the world we live in today.

This is the first time the Institute has ventured into working with primary schools and we are very keen to make sure that the resources we produce are relevant, useful and informative.

This pilot project has been funded through the Tomorrow's Engineers initiative at the Engineering Council, with the support from the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths.
