While it is difficult to disagree with the concept of reducing the use of single plastic used in straws, stirrers, cotton buds, balloon sticks, plates and cutlery, we must not forget the essential use of single use plastics in the current pandemic. We are now in danger of throwing out the baby with the bath water.
The inclusion of food/drinks containers and some types of carrier bags is worrying as we need to be aware that it is NOT the material itself that is to blame but the disposal and reuse capabilities followed by the recycling opportunities for the material under review. There is also no mention here of much increased fines for littering?
When can we expect for such emotional responses to be replaced by sound science based on life cycle thinking and the contributions made in reducing carbon emissions to net zero by 2050.
