IOM3 presents Dame Sue Ion with Honorary Fellowship

Dame Susan E Ion OBE FREng CEng has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship of IOM3. Following her presentation at the Energy Materials annual lecture organised by the IOM3 Energy Materials Group, Sue was presented a certificate confirming her new Honorary Fellowship status, by IOM3 President, Martin Cox.

London sparks debate over £83bn North Sea oil and gas clean-up

Over the next decade it is estimated that 100 fixed structures, 7,500km of subsea pipeline and approximately 1,800 wells will be retired as part of a decommissioning programme in the North Sea. Oil and Gas UK suggest that the cost of this infrastructure clean-up could hit £83 billion.

Grantham library gets materials and mining collections

Another important bank of metals and materials documents was recently moved to join the mining and materials collections in the new library facility at the IOM3 Grantham Centre in the East Midlands. The collection, known as the National Materials and Mining Archive, dates back to 1869 and has historic archival links to the founder fathers of the Iron and Steel Institute.

Plastics experts will be on-hand at Interplas 2017 knowledge hub

New for 2017, the Knowledge Pavilion will be a key show floor focus at Interplas 2017. The knowledge hub will be a dedicated space for engaging with Britain’s brightest plastics brains, trade bodies, membership associations and service providers in the industry.

The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) presented the 2017 Premier Awards to winners at a black tie event in London on 11 July. The prestigious IOM3 awards, medals and prizes that were given out on the evening acknowledged individuals and local society groups for their achievements, published work and contributions to the profession

London ‘packs’ out for Schools and Student Starpack Awards

To celebrate winners of the Schools and Student Starpack 2017 Awards, a presentation was held on 28 June at the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining headquarters at 297 Euston Road, London.
First prize was won by Ellen Britton, of Glasgow School of Art

Student’s interactive travel sunshade wins Design Innovation in Plastics Award

The Design Innovation in Plastics Award aims to encourage students to think about use of plastics as a key design material. This year’s competition brief challenged students to design innovative and sustainable products that will provide a more comfortable experience for travellers. From 160 entries the judging panel awarded first prize and £1000 to Ellen Britton, Product Design Engineering student, at Glasgow School of Art for her kids' travel sunshade.

The Women’s Engineering Society (WES) announced the ‘ WE50’ list of 50 women under 35 years of age to coincide with International Women in Engineering Day (INWED2017). The list acknowledges 50 of the engineering industry’s most inspirational young females.
