The Metalysis Story: From Start to Beginning

14 Nov 2017

Sheffield Metallurgical & Engineering Association Lecture & AGM

Mark Tomlinson - SMEA President & Managing Doirector, Metalysis

Mark will review developments in the manufacture of special  metal powders. Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) is set to revolutionise the way many components are made. Material efficiencies, properties and mechanical design solutions can all be improved. Both Boeing and Airbus believe that double digit percentage improvements in total cost can be achieved through the use of sound engineering and metallurgical design when combined with additive manufacturing.

Many discussions of the potential for additive techniques focus on the printing machines themselves, but little is said about the ‘metallic ink’ that goes into them.

Metalysis’ process makes metal and alloy powders for additive and conventional powder manufacturing. This talk will focus on the benefits of additive manufacturing and the novel materials science we use to create raw materials to enable this technology. It will also look ahead to the new materials and applications that become possible when manufacturers are freed from the constraints imposed by liquid phase processing, opening a radical new toolkit for materials design.
