Schools Affiliate Scheme – Connecting teachers to the world of materials, minerals and mining

Welcome to the new Schools Affiliate Scheme website.  Here you will be able to find out about membership of the Scheme and access a range of resources which will support and enhance your teaching.

Contained within the site you will find a wealth of information to help you bring the materials, minerals and mining topics in the 11 to 19 curriculum to life.  You can download previous newsletters and support literature, and in the near future you will also be able to gain access to the presentations given at our conferences for teachers and find out about how you can borrow one of our resource loan boxes.

Members should log in using the details supplied at the time of joining or renewing to gain access to all of the content.  If you are not a member you can find out about membership and join the Scheme to access all areas of this site.

This new site is in development, so keep an eye out for more exciting additions!

Our Commitment

The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining is committed to supporting the teaching of the topics related to our fields of interest within the 11 to 19 curriculum.

The Schools and Colleges Education Team, based at The Boilerhouse in Grantham, are responsible for the administration of the Schools Affiliate Scheme and for developing links with secondary schools, sixth form and FE colleges and all others involved in 11 to 19 education.

We also work with other organisations (science learning centres, STEMnet, Worshipful Companies and others) to spread the word about materials, minerals and mining and improve the knowledge and understanding of our disciplines amongst teachers, students and the public.

Do you BELIEVE IN D&T?

In January this year, the Government announced that it would be launching a National Curriculum Review to consult on major changes it wanted to make to the primary and secondary school National Curricula in England. The review has the stated intention to slim down the National Curriculum dramatically in order to provide school management and teachers with much greater freedom to decide what is best to teach their students. The only subjects guaranteed to remain as a statutory part of the National Curriculum are English, Mathematics, Science and Physical Education. All other subjects may become optional and therefore will be taught only at the discretion of the school.

Whilst the Design and Technology Association fully believe in schools’ abilities to provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all students, they are concerned that too few schools currently recognise the importance and value of a D&T education.

Removing it from the National Curriculum would seriously undermine both the life chances of young people and the country’s economic prospects now and in the future.

Sign the online petition to help ensure that D&T stays firmly in the National Curriculum.  FOr more information visit Believe in D&T.
