Women stole the show in the Institute’s 2009 student and technician awards, with four out of the five winners being female. The prizes were presented on 11 November at the Institute’s London headquarters.

Technicians of the Year

Terri Westerman, a student member of IOM3, won the 2009 Technician of the Year award in the higher category. She started a full-time plant fitter apprenticeship with UK Coal last November.

The national category of the Technician of the Year award went to Jamie Jones, who is working towards the second year of his HNC at Hartlepool College of Further Education. Since September he has been in full-time employment with Cleveland Potash as a Mechanical Fitter.

Student Competitive Prizes

Grace Smalley won the Royal Charter prize as the best materials student of any discipline, having studied an MEng in Materials Engineering at Loughborough University. Grace hopes to combine her materials knowledge with her love of research to improve the prostheses used by the NHS.

Lovoni Rahman, as the best graduate in ceramics, received the AT Green Award for 2009. She achieved a first in BEng in dental materials at Queen Mary, University of London, and has consistently been in the top three students in her degree programme.

The RH Craven award went to Nanayaa Hughes-Brittain, the top student in her year on the MEng in Materials Engineering in Medicine course, also at Queen Mary, University of London. She received the highest mark of all MEng and BEng materials students.
