Winner of the 2009 Literature Review Prize announced
PhD student Samantha Bennett (see image left) from the University of Cambridge, UK, has won the Institute's 2009 Materials Literature Review Prize. The award is judged by a panel drawn from the Editorial Board of the Institute’s journal Materials Science and Technology (MST). The prestigious prize included an award of £350 and Bennett has the opportunity to publish her paper in MST.
Bennett was awarded first prize for her review, ‘Dislocations and their reduction in GaN [gallium nitride]’. Originally from the USA, Samantha’s research supports Cambridge’s efforts to produce high quality, low defect density GaN. Devices fabricated from GaN include visible light emitting diodes (LEDs), laser diodes and water purification systems based on UV LEDs.
Prizes of £100 were made to commended entries from Imran Bhamji, for his paper ‘Solid state joining of metals by linear friction welding’, and Hossain Rashed for his review ‘Superplasticity in magnesium alloys’. Both are PhD students at The University of Manchester, UK.
The Prize is open to postgraduates studying for a materials science and engineering related qualification at a UK institution.
