Swinburne Lecture to explore process structuring of polymers

Phil CoatesPhil Coates The 2008 Swinburne Lecture, ‘Process Structuring of Polymers', will be presented by polymer academic Phil Coates FREng FIMMM, Professor of Polymer Engineering, Polymer IRC at the University of Bradford. It will be held on 17 September at the National Science Learning Centre in York as part of the UK Polymer Showcase.

As winner of the Institute's Swinburne Award for making an outstanding contribution to the advancement and knowledge of plastics, Phil Coates is an acknowledged expert in the field. His lecture will explore the biomedical, optical, dental and pharmaceutical applications of polymers.

Coates won the 2008 Swinburne Award for enhancing the understanding of polymer processing and the industrial application of this research. He developed an in-situ real-time process measurement that embraces melt and solid phases, and is particularly noted for his work on characterisation.

The UK Polymer Showcase, themed ‘Polymers and Society', will run from 16-18 September at the National Science Learning Centre. The conference will disseminate the latest scientific and technological developments in polymers and soft nanotechnology.
