Olympics' material ban retracted
The UK’s London Olympics Organising Committee has retracted its ban on PVC products in response to demands from construction companies. It is now calling on industry to find a sustainable long-term solution for the use and disposal of PVC in temporary buildings at the 2012 Olympics sites.
In November 2008, the Committee produced a Sustainable Sourcing Code for suppliers, which restricted the use of substances and materials such as PVC, lead, zinc, nickel, vanadium and styrene.
Following the issue of the Code, organisations such as the British Plastics Federation and the Zinc Information Centre wrote to the Committee arguing against its restrictions.
The Committee now says it will work with the Materials Forum to develop specifications for the use of all materials at the Games.
