Four materials-related prizes are open for nominations, two of which are aimed at younger scientists. The awards are organised by the Federation of European Materials Societies (FEMS), of which IOM3 is a member society. All entries should be submitted by 1 October 2008.

The European Materials Medal is the most prestigious of the awards organised by FEMS, and is given in recognition of outstanding service to the field of materials science and engineering in Europe.

For those under the age of 40, the Materials Science and Technology Prize rewards significant contributions in any area of materials science and engineering. A selection of materials science and technology books forms part of the prize.

The Lecturer Award for Excellence in Materials Science and Engineering is for young materials scientists who are excellent communicators and who have embraced an emerging materials-related topic. It supports two winners to lecture throughout Europe, will the aim of raising the profile of the materials community. There is also a 1,500 euro prize.

Technological development and innovation is recognised by the Materials Innovation Prize. The award assesses the degree of innovation and market potential of inventions that improve the quality of life of individuals, general welfare and sustainability.

The winner(s) of each award are expected to present a lecture on their research at the biennial Euromat conference in September 2009, and a corresponding article will be published in a European materials science and engineering journal.
