IOM3 Local Society of the Year award winners

The Materials Society of Cumbria and the Cleveland Institution of Engineers have won the Institute's new award, Local Society of the Year. They will each receive up to £1,000 to spend on organising an event of their choice. The societies were judged on membership, communication and events, in two categories based on average attendance: under 30 people and 30 or more.

In the former category, given the small membership of the Materials Society of Cumbria, due to its rural location with limited numbers of members, it has organised an interesting and varied programme of activities to appeal to a wide audience. It is involved with schools’ and teachers’ events in the area as part of its youth/schools initiative which has been running for two to three years.

For 30 or more average attendance, the Cleveland Institution of Engineers took the prize. It was judged to have improved the most year on year of all societies, with marked improvement in attendance and membership recruitment.
