Ken Barraclough Memorial Lecture & SMEA Members Dinner

John Hamshere, Chief Executive, Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust will present the 2012 Ken Barraclough Memorial Lecture on Tuesday 20th March.  In 1994 John was appointed as the first Executive Director of Kelham Island Museum, which was facing closure.  He expanded the trusts activities with the addition of Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet and is also responsible for the recently restored Shepherd Wheel in the Porter Valley, which will be officially opened in May.

His has chosen the title Water, Weirs and Wheels – Powering the Past at Sheffield’s Industrial Museums.  This will not be a history lecture, but aims will give an insight into what people can still visit and see at the three water-powered sites which tell the whole story of industrial Sheffield, or at least a large part of it. He will go from the 12th century to the 2007 floods at Kelham Island, the monks to the current lottery bid at Abbeydale, and 1584 to the completed restoration at Shepherd Wheel.

Immediately following the lecture, at approximately 7.30, will be THE MEMBERS’ DINNER.  The price for the dinner plus wine and coffee is only  £20.00.  Members are limited to one guest.
