The Institute is strengthening ties with Florida to promote materials science overseas. It has established a new Materials Society in the State of Florida, USA, the first of its kind in the USA.

‘The society will be run by volunteers, is free to join and open to anyone,’ said Siobhan Matthews of the Younger Members' Committee of IOM3. ‘Anyone with an interest in materials, minerals and mining, such as industrialists, researchers, academics, students and the general public, are welcome to join.’

The new society will promote the Institute's work overseas, helping members gain professional recognition with qualifications, and arranging networking events. The society's first meeting was on 12 March, held jointly with the London Materials Society.

Charles Ishee receives a Certificate of Appreciation

To cement these closer working relationships within Florida, three staff members visited the Florida Department of Transportation’s State Materials Office on 20 February. Peter Davies, Marketing, Siobhan Matthews, Younger Members' Committee, and David Arthur, Head of Member Services, presented a certificate of appreciation to Charles Ishee, Structural Materials Research Engineer, for his work as a judge of the 2008 Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition.

‘It was a unique experience to evaluate the work of the various countries,’ he said. ‘Overall, I felt that the judging experience was both rewarding and informative.’
