Institute Fellows in the news

Anthony KellyAnthony KellyProfessor Anthony Kelly CBE FREng FRS FIMMM (pictured) has been awarded the President’s Medal from the Royal Academy of Engineering for a career of over 60 years.

Anthony is a Past President of IOM3 and best known for work on high-performing composite materials, which form the basis of most major civil and mechanical structures. He works at the University of Cambridge.

Presenting the award, Lord Browne of Madingley said, ‘This country has produced many exceptional engineers but few as distinguished as Professor Kelly. His epithet as the “father of composite materials” is well-earned, as his reputation is global’.

Dr Robert John FREng FIMMM has been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Lately Chief Executive Officer of The Welding Institute, he studied metallurgy at Swansea University and gained a PhD in weld beat defects in five per cent nickel steel.

He went to work for BOC, in its welding division, and was involved in R&D, technical and marketing operations. After three years with ESAB Group (UK) he moved to ESAB AB, in Sweden, as Group Marketing Director.
