ICMM releases new guidance on preventing fatalities

The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) has released a report entitled "Leadership Matters – Managing Fatal Risk Guidance", a new tool for the mining industry.

The report focuses on the actions and behaviors that should be exercised by managers of operations and site leadership teams to help eliminate the risk of fatalities.  It present a series of self-diagnostic prompts – built around an internationally recognized risk management framework – to help identify gaps in safety management systems.  This publication complements ICMM’s earlier report  – Leadership matters: The elimination of fatalities.

Both reports provide checklist-based advice on three key themes:

  • Live the vision of zero fatalities
  • Focus on high potential events
  • Recognize the fallibility of people and systems
