ICMM launches Human Rights and Security Guidance Tools

The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) joined the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the global oil and gas industry association for environmental and social issues (IPIECA), and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) at the launch of a first-of-its-kind practical guide to help mining companies maintain operational security while ensuring respect for human rights and humanitarian law. The publication called Implementation Guidance Tools (IGT) addresses some of the challenges that many participants have been grappling with since the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPs) were launched over a decade ago. A comprehensive instrument to implement the VPs, the IGT is particularly useful to companies operating in geographical areas of conflict and weak governance.  The VPs are a set of non-binding principles created to assist extractive companies to balance security concerns with human rights.
