The Government has created a Technician Council to promote professional qualifications in engineering and science.

The proposal for a new council was put forward by Lord Mandelson in the ‘Skills for Growth’ White Paper published in November 2009, following recognition that intermediate skills are inadequately represented in the working population. This has a direct effect on Engineering Technicians (EngTech) and Incorporated Engineers (IEng), two of the professional qualifications which IOM3 awards.

Steve Holliday, Chief Executive of the National Grid, will chair the council. He is looking forward to building 'a framework for a modern class of technician to ensure that this critical role in the workplace is more widely recognised and respected. I am particularly keen to ensure that young people have a better understanding of what technicians do and the rewards that training to be one brings them.'
