Fellows in the news

Professor Challapalli Suryanarayana FIMMM has been ranked 40th in a list of the top 100 researchers of the past decade. He was selected out of 500,000 materials scientists and ranked 21st out of US scientists.

‘It means a lot to me because it is recognition from my peers,’ Challapalli said. He has developed novel materials such as nanostructured monolithic and composite materials, improved intermetallics and bulk metallic glasses. He has published over 300 research papers and 20 books.

The list is compiled by Thomson Reuters, based on the quality of research publications and how many times they have been cited.

Sir Colin Humphreys CBE FRS FREng FIMMM has been awarded Fellowship of the Royal Society. He is Director of Research at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, University of Cambridge, UK, and was president of IOM3 from 2002-03. He is also Master of the Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers, which sponsors the Institute’s Young Persons’ Lecture Competition.

Sir Colin is renowned in the field of electron microscopy. He has researched indium gallium nitride (InGaN) quantum wells used in LEDs. Work on InGaN has led to industrial interest to help develop the technology.
