2010 Davidge Medal: call for entries

Call for entries are now open for the 2010 Davidge Medal; an annual prize for the best literature review by a PhD student on an innovative topic in ceramics. The prize is run and judged by the Editorial Board of Advances in Applied Ceramics: Structural, Functional and Bioceramics (AAC), the specialist ceramics journal of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, and is open to postgraduates studying for a materials science and engineering related qualification at any academic institution worldwide.

The Prize commemorates the distinguished contributions to the science and application of ceramics made by the late Roger Davidge (1936–97). During a career spent largely at AERE Harwell during the laboratory’s heyday, and also at Leeds and Oxford universities, he pioneered the introduction of fracture mechanics concepts to ceramics. His research in areas that included fracture, toughness, fatigue, thermal shock and the statistics of mechanical fracture made an outstanding contribution to knowledge on these subjects.

Candidates wishing to be considered for the Prize should submit an extended abstract and outline of the review no later than Friday 30 April 2010. From these entries, the judges will invite a short-list of up to 10 candidates to submit full reviews.

For further information, please download the call for entries attached below, or contact Naomi Asantewa-Sechereh, Maney Publishing, tel: +44 (0)207 451 7308.

Edited by Professor Mohan Edirisinghe of University College London, UK, AAC publishes original research on functional ceramics, engineering ceramics, including ceramic matrix composites and glass composites, and bioceramics. Coverage encompasses areas such as nanotechnology and biomaterials where materials science is progressing and evolving through interdisciplinary collaboration. For further information, including how to submit to the journal, visit the journal homepage. For the latest content, sign up for journal TOC alerts.
